How to merge PDF files into one, free and without uploading them

A contract and its annexes, a job application with a CV, a cover letter and certificates, a month of receipts for an expense claim. Many forms and portals take one file, not five, so the PDFs have to become one.

How to merge PDFs

  1. Open Merge PDF and choose the first PDF. Its pages open side by side.
  2. Click Add PDF and choose the other files. You can pick several at once. Their pages are added at the end, each marked with the name of the file it came from.
  3. Drag the pages into the order you want.
  4. Click Apply changes. You’re back in the editor with one document.
  5. Click Download. The merged PDF is saved under the first file’s name.

Put the pages in order

Drag a page and drop it where it belongs; the other pages make room.

To move several pages at once, select them first. Click a page, then Shift-click another to select everything in between, or Ctrl-click (Cmd-click on a Mac) to add single pages. Drag any of the selected pages and the rest go with it.

Each page has small buttons along its top edge to turn it left or right and to delete it. With pages selected, the bar at the bottom does the same for all of them.

Only need part of a file?

Add the whole file, then delete the pages you don’t need, before you click Apply changes.

It works the other way too. To take a few pages out of a PDF instead, select them and click Extract: you get a new PDF with only those pages, and the original stays as it was.

What carries over

Each page comes over as it was, with its text, pictures, links and annotations such as highlights and comments. The merged document keeps the title of the first file.

Bookmarks, the table of contents some PDFs show in a side panel, are not carried over.

After Apply changes the merged file is open in the editor, so you can sign it, add a note or fix a typo before you download it.

Is it safe to merge confidential files?

Most merge sites upload every file to their server and send the result back. For a contract or a set of medical records, that’s several confidential documents on someone else’s computer.

Here the files are read and combined in your browser, on your device. None of them is uploaded, so it works for anything you’d rather not share.
